The Yukine Bath Mat from Shinto features a characteristic “squeaky” feel that comes from their atozarashi refining method — a post-weave process that removes remaining starch and impurities. The Yukine spends twice as long at this step to maximise the cotton’s natural absorbency. By using white cotton for the warp and dyed cotton for the weft, these mats conjure visions of earth, water, or fresh grass peeking out from beneath fallen snow.

Care
Avoid pulling loose threads — snip them carefully with scissors. Machine wash with like colours on the gentlest setting in cold water with mild detergent, preferably in a mesh laundry bag. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. Hang dry; do not stretch when wet.
